Jacqueline Shannon wrote Why It's Great to be a Girl: 50 Eye-Opening Things You Can Tell Your Daughter to Increase Her Pride in Being Female to help parents and other adults know what to say when young girls ask inevitable questions. After listing the benefit or reason to be proud, she provides an explanation. I found this book fascinating and wish I had been able to read something like this when I was a girl who thought boys had all the advantages.
Here are just a few of my favorite examples:
1. Nature was kinder to females when it came to genital design. Yours are tucked safely inside, protected from cold and injury. :)
2. While mostly males participate in the spectator or "watched" sports, overall, females are the most active athletes.
8. Anthropologists and archeologists credit females with the "civilization" of humankind.
11. Some of history's most effective and powerful eladers have been queens. (Response to questions about female presidents in the United States!)
16. Except for muscles, the female body is stronger than the male body in every way.
26. Doctors agree that females bear physical pain far better than males do.
32. Females commit far, far fewer crimes than males.
38. The friendships between females are richer, deeper, stronger, more intimate, and more affectionate than those between males.
42. Females made many of the biggest medical breakthroughs of the twentieth century. (extensive and fascinating description)
Bonus! Females get the hiccups only one-quarter as often as males do.
47. Females are responsible for the two biggest advances in computer programming. (Yea!)
50. Only females can give birth. (Shannon suggests using this as a response to the question "Mommy, why do women change their names to their husbands' names when they get married?" She advocates saying something about how women give birth and men often give their names. I thought this was really clever.
Shannon also includes a suggested reading list for adults and for children. I strongly recommend this book!
